What's an operation?
Any action that changes data or calls an external system — database writes, API calls to external services, and synced record changes. Initial data import and read-only actions are always free. AI calls and notification sends have their own separate meters. A daily sync that picks up 15 new records and updates 3 existing uses 18 operations — but loading those records for the first time costs nothing.
What's an AI credit?
One AI credit = ~$0.001 USD in API cost. Smaller models like Haiku burn fewer credits per call than larger ones like Opus. Mug’s smart routing feature lets you set fast, balanced, and powerful models for workflows and agents for better control of credit burn. If you bring your own model provider API key, you can bypass Mug’s credit system entirely.
Does building with the CLI Agent Kit use AI credits?
No, building is "free". You run the CLI locally using your own coding agent — Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, etc. Mug only meters AI credits for agents and workflows that run in the cloud in your Mug workspace.
What counts as a database record?
Mug workspaces can have any number of SQLite databases, and every row across every database counts as one record. Data can be uploaded directly, synced from external sources, or created by your workflows and agents.
Does syncing external data cost operations?
Only when records are updated. Your initial sync of 50,000 records doesn't use any operations — initial data import is free. After that, each new or updated record that syncs counts as an operation. A daily sync that checks a table of 500 records and syncs 12 updated records uses 12 operations.
How do I keep deployed agents from burning AI credits?
Unlike always-on agents like OpenClaw and Hermes, Mug agents run inside workflows — they spin up, do their job, then stop. Set credit caps and turn limits per agent so a runaway task still delivers partial results without completely draining your budget. You can use Mug’s smart routing to set fast, balanced, and powerful models for your agent to help control credit usage based on task complexity.
Do email and SMS sends use operations?
No. Email and SMS have their own meters, separate from operations. Each plan includes an allotment of each with optional flex overages if you go over. Mug isn't a marketing platform — these are for transactional notifications, not bulk sends. Bring your own Resend or Twilio keys to bypass Mug’s limits, or build workflows that send through any third-party API directly without any Mug limits.
What if I go over my plan limits?
Mug has a flex overage system — you aren't forced to upgrade your plan because one usage dimension spiked. Each meter (operations, records, storage, AI, email, SMS) has its own overage toggle and dollar cap, so you control exactly how much extra spend you're comfortable with. A busy month costs a few dollars more, not a tier jump.
